4/5 stars

The Birth Partner is an incredibly helpful resource not just for partners and doulas, but also for you, the person preparing to give birth. The book lays out what labor can look and feel like in a calm, clear, and empowering way. It explains comfort measures, positions, and medical interventions in language that helps you understand your options without feeling overwhelmed.

One of the strongest parts of this book is how it teaches your support person to truly see you—your needs, your cues, your preferences—so that they can show up in a grounded and responsive way during labor. Even as the “birth partner” book, it gives you a sense of what kind of support you deserve and how to advocate for it.

It earns four stars mostly because some sections are a bit dense or feel slightly outdated compared to the most current research and inclusive language. But overall, it remains an excellent guide to help both you and your support team walk into birth feeling more prepared, connected, and confident.
